EyeCan's Smart Headband Empowers Blind Swimmers with Real-Time Guidance

Israeli startup EyeCan is pioneering a groundbreaking solution to empower visually impaired swimmers with a sense of security and independence. The company has developed a smart headband equipped with a camera that continuously scans the pool bottom and the swimmer's path, alerting them in real time if they are deviating from their lane or approaching an obstacle. The alerts are sent through bone conduction technology, which sends sounds to the inner ear through the skull's bones.

Visually impaired swimmers often face challenges of disorientation, lane deviation, and collisions with pool edges. EyeCan's innovative device aims to eliminate these issues by providing immediate feedback and guidance. Founder and CEO Amit Fisher highlighted that this technology is particularly important for the blind or visually impaired, as there is currently no existing technological solution allowing them to swim independently.

The startup's headband operates by collecting data through a camera and processing it using a back-of-device processor. Alerts are then transmitted to chips on either side of the swimmer's head, providing feedback to help them maintain their course. Fisher emphasized that the current practice of using "tappers" (soft, pole-like sticks held by another person) to guide blind swimmers is insufficient and disrupts the sense of independence and self-confidence.

EyeCan is committed to refining its technology through collaborations with visually impaired individuals who provide feedback on its efficacy and comfort. The company is also developing a cameraless prototype to further enhance the user experience. The ultimate goal is to make swimming an independent activity for the blind and visually impaired, promoting their physical well-being and boosting their confidence.

Founded in 2022 by Amit Fisher and Tomer Etinger, EyeCan aims to make a positive impact by harnessing technology to address real-world challenges faced by people with disabilities. The startup's smart headband has the potential to transform the swimming experience for the visually impaired, opening doors to a new level of autonomy and enjoyment in the pool.
