Natural Resources Canada has chosen Tel Aviv University (TAU) to develop software aimed at strengthening Canada's earthquake early warning systems. The software will integrate arrays of sensor stations, particularly on the West Coast, to provide more accurate and timely alerts.

In 2019, NRCan committed $151 million over five years to establish the system, which includes numerous remote sensors along the coast, including BC Ferries terminals. The newly developed software by TAU, in collaboration with SeismicAI, an Israeli high-tech company specializing in early warning technology, will connect these sensors, forming a comprehensive network.

In addition to alerting individuals, the EEW system can also be utilized by infrastructure safety systems to trigger automated actions. These actions may include slowing down trains, diverting traffic from bridges and tunnels, adjusting air traffic, halting surgical procedures, closing gas valves, and opening emergency response facility doors.

The collaboration with Tel Aviv University aims to provide Canada with advanced expertise and access to the most precise and timely earthquake and tsunami alerts, enhancing preparedness and mitigating potential damage and loss of life caused by seismic events.
